KASU Hosts Lecture on Self-Motivation and Institutional Excellence

The Center for Biosecurity, Biosafety, Infectious Disease, and One Health (CEBBIDOH) at Kaduna State University organized a groundbreaking two-hour public lecture on Tuesday, 26th November 2024 titled "Bridging the Gap: Leveraging Self-Motivation for Achieving Institutional Excellence." The event attracted staff, students and stakeholders in education, promoting a shared dialogue on how self-motivation can fuel personal, professional, and institutional success.

In his opening remarks, the Honourable Commissioner of Education, Prof. Mohammed Sani Bello, represented by Prof. Usman Abubakar Zaria, Director-General of the Kaduna State School Quality Assurance Authority underscored the vital role of motivation in achieving excellence, stating that sustained self-motivation empowers individuals and institutions to reach their full potential.

The Vice-Chancellor, Kaduna State University, Prof. Abdullahi Ibrahim Musa, delivered an inspiring speech where he emphasized the event's central theme, urging attendees to actively address gaps in personal growth, academic success, and institutional progress. “Success is intentional—it requires planning, focus, and relentless effort,” he stated, encouraging participants to apply the knowledge gained from the lecture in practical, impactful ways.

The first presentation, delivered by Prof. Solomon Oduma on behalf of the Dean, Student Affairs, Prof. Tukur Abdulkadir, explored the transformative power of mindset. He highlighted the importance of positive self-talk, daily reflection, and a growth-oriented attitude in overcoming challenges and fostering resilience.

The Special Adviser to the Vice Chancellor on Research Culture, Prof. Hauwa E. Yusuf delved into the significance of purpose and goal-setting. She emphasized that a clear sense of purpose drives innovation and enables individuals to navigate obstacles effectively. “Nothing good comes easy,” she reminded attendees, urging them to align their goals with their aspirations.

The third speaker, Prof. John Laah tackled the detrimental effects of procrastination. Highlighting its impact on performance, stress levels, and emotional well-being. He advocated for self-discipline as an antidote. “Procrastination is counterproductive,” he stressed, urging participants to practice time management and self-control.

The final presentation, led by Dr. James Chibueze Igwe, explored self-motivation as a catalyst for unlocking potential. He discussed barriers to motivation, including lack of recognition and unrealistic expectations, offering actionable strategies such as mentorship, time management, and personal development to overcome these challenges.

Dr. Sani Aminu, representing the Honourable Commissioner of Health, Hajiya Umma K. Ahmed posed a reflective question to the audience: “What is our purpose and where are we headed?” His address centered on self-awareness and focus as cornerstones for achieving personal and collective goals.

The Honourable Commissioner, Ministry of Business, Innovation and Technology, Mrs. Patience Takao was represented by Mr. Shedwa Reuben Kakaki, while the Honourable Commissioner, Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Alh. Sadiq Mamman Lagos was represented by the Director, Inspectorate, Hajiya Maimuna Safiyanu.

The event concluded with a vote of thanks from the Director, Research and Development, Prof. Ben A. Chindo. Attendees left inspired, armed with practical insights into the role of self-motivation in driving personal growth and institutional excellence.

Driving Solutions through Collaboration: KASU hosts the 3rd International Conference 2024, tackling global challenges in leadership, sustainability, and digital transformation

Kaduna State University's Faculty of Management Sciences successfully hosted the 3rd International Conference 2024 on Wednesday, 27th November 2024, themed “Global Challenges on Inclusive Leadership, Environmental Sustainability and Digital Transformation in Management Science.” The event, which attracted scholars, practitioners, and students, tackled pressing issues such as inclusive leadership, environmental sustainability, and digital transformation in management sciences.

In his opening remarks, the Local Organising Committee Chairman, Prof. Aminu Ladan Sharehu, underlined the importance of innovation and collaboration in addressing global challenges. He urged participants to actively engage in the discussions, which he described as vital for promoting societal progress. “Collaboration and innovation are key to addressing the challenges facing management sciences today,” he stressed.

The Vice Chancellor of KASU, Prof. Abdullahi Ibrahim Musa, while delivering his remarks, commended the organizers for a well-executed event. He appreciated the Executive Governor of Kaduna State, His Excellency, Sen. Uba Sani and other dignitaries present, highlighting their support for the university’s global vision. He also encouraged staff members, particularly from the Faculty of Management Sciences, to explore international opportunities such as collaborations to broaden their academic and professional horizons.

The Principal Private Secretary to the Governor of Kaduna State, Prof. Bello Ayuba, who was represented by the Executive Secretary of Kaduna State Residents Identity Management Agency, Dr. John Danfulani, delivered a powerful keynote address, stressing the role of inclusive leadership in promoting equality. Drawing from his personal ties to KASU, he stated, “Without inclusive leadership, problems will arise everywhere,” urging participants to remain steadfast in their pursuit of knowledge.

The Chairman of the Occasion, the Honourable Commissioner of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Alh. Sadiq Mamman Lagos, represented by Mal. Alhassan Ahmed, the  Provost of the College of Communications, Social and Management Sciences, Prof. Gimba Victor Kyari, represented by Prof. Ayodele Joseph praised the conference for addressing timely global issues. They highlighted the role of interdisciplinary research in solving complex problems and called on participants to make actionable recommendations.

The Dean of the Faculty of Management Sciences, Dr. Rahilatu Ahmed Muhammad, expressed her delight at the event's success and emphasized the faculty’s dedication to promoting academic and professional growth. She also reaffirmed the faculty’s commitment to ensuring that the outcomes of the conference translate into impactful contributions to management practices globally.

A highlight of the conference was Prof. Jafaru Abdullahi Bambale's presentation on inclusive leadership. He stressed the need for self-awareness among leaders, explaining how it enhances decision-making and fosters respect for diversity. Addressing the underrepresentation of Black individuals in senior corporate roles, Prof. Bambale called for proactive recruitment strategies and accountability measures to close the inclusion gap.

Breakout sessions and panel discussions delved into topics ranging from sustainability to digital transformation, providing a dynamic platform for participants to share insights and explore solutions. The conference concluded with a renewed commitment from participants to continue dialogue and collaborative efforts to address the complex challenges facing management sciences today.

The 3rd International Conference 2024 not only reaffirmed KASU’s dedication to global engagement but also underscored the role of academia in driving inclusive and sustainable solutions for a better future.

Rediscovering Our Roots: Scholar champions African heritage and indigenous knowledge as pillars for growth and education

Kaduna State University (KASU) hosted a thought-provoking public lecture on Thursday, 28th November 2024, titled “Africa in the Academy: The Challenges of Ontological Suicide,” focusing on the importance of African heritage and indigenous knowledge systems. The lecture brought together scholars and leaders to reimagine Africa’s role in global intellectual discourse.

The Vice Chancellor, Prof. Abdullahi Ibrahim Musa, delivered the opening remarks, emphasizing the need for transformative knowledge over mere information. He highlighted the pivotal role of philosophy in promoting understanding and growth among Africa's youth.

The keynote speaker, Emeritus Professor John Ayotunde (Tunde) Isola Bewaji from the University of the West Indies, delved into the challenges Africa faces in preserving its cultural identity. He lamented the historical disregard for African traditions and knowledge, which often gain recognition only after validation by Western science.

Prof. Bewaji passionately advocated for a return to Africa’s roots, encouraging the continent to embrace its history, traditions, and rich cultural practices, including local skills, natural medicines, and preservation techniques. He also criticized the neglect of African history in school curricula, urging its integration to inspire pride and identity among the youth.

The Chairman of the event, the Acting Vice Chancellor of the Federal University of Education, Zaria, Dr. Suleiman Balarabe who was represented by the Director, Quality Assurance, Dr. Tunde Adesina stressed the importance of incorporating indigenous knowledge and narratives into Nigerian universities. He called for the adoption of local curricula to foster self-reliance and cultural authenticity.

The lecture concluded with a call to action for Africans to reclaim their heritage and use it as a foundation for sustainable growth and development in education, culture, and daily life.
