PEAN Seminar Explores Diversity and Equity in Higher Education

The Pharmafluence Education Advancement Network (PEAN) has on Thursday, 12th September, 2024 organized a seminar titled “Diversity in Science in Higher Education: Celebrating Differences and Building Unity” at the University’s 500-seater Pharmacy Lecture Theater.

Pharm. Kenneth Bitrus David, on behalf of PEAN, welcomed participants and officially opened the seminar. The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Abdullahi Ibrahim Musa, highlighted the importance of diversity and equity in Nigeria, advocating for merit-based opportunities and the expansion of e-learning to enhance educational access.

Representing the Honorable Commissioner of  Education, Kaduna State, Prof. Mohammed Sani Bello, the Director of Higher Education, Hajiya Adama Wada, called for integrity and honesty in efforts to strengthen unity and equity across Nigeria. Pharm Naomi Bitrus David, a PEAN representative, emphasized that while pharmacists play a key role in the network, PEAN collaborates with other organizations to foster diversity in higher education through quality teaching, mentorship, and collaboration.

Prof. Audee T. Giwa discussed how universities can serve as platforms for promoting diversity among different groups, stressing the importance of patience, communication, and acceptance in building a unified society. Prof. Timothy Bulus underscored the role of diversity in driving innovation, encouraging the adoption of new perspectives and moving beyond outdated traditions to foster creativity.

Addressing the issue of sexual harassment, Prof. Hauwa'u E. Yusuf advocated for victims to seek psychosocial support and stressed the university’s zero-tolerance policy toward harassment, calling for appropriate responses to ensure equity. Mal Usman Iliyasu Ladan concluded the seminar by discussing the critical role of alumni in promoting diversity and equity in professional settings, stressing the importance of mutual support and collaboration.
