"Fertile land is essential for human survival; therefore, we must care for the environment in which we live" ~Dr. Hadiza Sabuwa Balarabe

The Kaduna State Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources, in collaboration with UNICEF and ACReSAL, organized and celebrated World Environmental Day with the theme "Land Restoration, Degradation and Drought Resilience." The event took place on Wednesday, 5th June 2024, at the 1000-seater Auditorium of Kaduna State University (KASU).

The well-attended event featured presentations focused on environmental preservation. A notable highlight was a drama sponsored by the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources, projected for the audience, emphasizing the importance of planting at least five trees for every tree cut down to mitigate the risks of diseases and drought.

In her speech, the Deputy Governor of Kaduna State, Dr. Hadiza Sabuwa Balarabe, emphasized the critical importance of environmental preservation for the well-being of the population. She reaffirmed the state's current administration's commitment, led by Senator Uba Sani, to environmental conservation and announced an upcoming statewide campaign aimed at planting millions of trees.

While representing the Commissioner of Environment and Natural Resources, the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Mrs Linda Yakubu, urged the attendees to view World Environment Day as a continuous commitment rather than a one-day event, fostering environmental consciousness for future generations.

Awards were also presented to the winners of quizzes held before the event, acknowledging their contributions to a greener, better environment.

The event concluded with the Deputy Governor and other dignitaries launching a tree-planting initiative within the university, underscoring the significance of tree planting and environmental stewardship.

The event had in attendance the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman, Governing Council of Kaduna State University, Mal. (Dr) Husaini Adamu Dikko, Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Abdullahi I. Musa, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor Academic, Prof. YushauI. Ango, Deputy Vice-Chancellor Administration, Prof. Muhammad Bashir Ali, Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Strategy, Innovation and Service Delivery, Prof. Helen A. Andow, the Deputy Chief of Staff, Office of the Deputy Governor, Barr. James Kanyip and a host of other dignitaries from within and outside of the university.
