NAAT-KASU Strengthened Cooperation with Management

Members of the National Association of Academic Technologists, Kaduna State University Branch (NAAT-KASU), paid a courtesy visit to the office of Vice Chancellor Prof. Abdullahi I. Musa on Wednesday, 26th June 2024, at the university's main campus.

The delegation, led by the outgoing chairperson and newly elected National Treasurer of the association, Comrade Khadijat Abubakar Vatsa, expressed their appreciation for the university's leadership and pledged their support and cooperation to help advance the institution. The association members also raised concerns they hoped the management would address to enhance their ability to perform their duties effectively.

The Vice-Chancellor Prof. Abdullahi I. Musa thanked the delegation for their visit and praised the association's efforts. He reiterated the importance of collective effort in advancing the university and assured them that their concerns would be addressed in accordance with university policies.

Deputy Vice-Chancellor Administration Prof. Bashir Muhammad Ali also assured the association members that the management is committed to addressing their concerns, emphasizing the importance of staff and students' well-being.

The meeting was highly interactive and concluded with the Vice-Chancellor encouraging the association to propose programs and activities that the university could support to benefit the broader community.

Other members of the association present include Com. Bitrus Solomon, Com. Aliyu Garba, Com. Aliyu Sani, and Com. Abdulsalam Abdulkadir. The administrative secretary to the VC, Mr Bakut Josephat Amai, was also present.

"Drug abuse is a significant issue both locally and globally, demanding our highest level of attention"~Prof. Abdullahi I. Musa

On Wednesday, 26th June 2024, the Kaduna State University Drug-Free Club paid a courtesy visit to the Vice-Chancellor of Kaduna State University, Prof. Abdullahi Ibrahim Musa. The primary purpose of the visit as disclosed by the president of the club, Comrade Courage Kantiyok, was to formally present the club’s intentions towards promoting healthy living among students and reducing the use of illicit drugs and substances. The club aims to foster positive behavioral change within the university community.

In addition, Mr. Goodheart A. Sheyin, the Patron of the Drug-Free Club, solicited the university's support in promoting a drug-free university and community.

Prof. Abdullahi Ibrahim Musa, the Vice-Chancellor of Kaduna State University, while emphasizing the importance of the club, expressed his concerns about the increasing problem of drug abuse, noting that it is a significant issue both locally and internationally. He encouraged the club to continue to build on their good work and also tasked them to come up with programs that the university could come in and support.

Dr. Babangida Umar Dangani, the University Librarian, equally underlined the importance of a drug-free society, stressing how the problem directly or indirectly affects everyone in the community.

The visit by the Kaduna State University drug-free club served as a significant step in the fight against drug abuse both on and off campus.

Also present at the meeting were the Director of Academic Planning, Prof. Auwal Farouk Abdusalam, the University's Public Relations Officer, Adamu Nuhu Bargo, SA to the VC, Abdulazeez Aliyu Idris, Mrs. Bilkisu Lukman and Abdullahi Tabari from the PR Unit.

Empowering Women Entrepreneurs through Technology Initiative: Insights from the "Women in Tech Skills Training" Program at Kaduna State University.

The "Women in Tech Skills Training" program, a two-day event starting Tuesday, 25th June 2024, at the ICT Computer Room, Kaduna State University, aimed to empower women entrepreneurs with essential technology skills. The event was organized by Huawei Technology Nigeria and the Renewed Hope Initiative.

Her Excellency, the First Lady of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu who was represented by Hajiya Rabi Salisu, Honourable Commissioner for the Ministry of Human Services and Social Development, Kaduna State, highlighted the significant strides women have made in both international and local markets by leveraging technology to enhance their entrepreneurial skills. She noted that Kaduna State ranks second after Lagos State in the use of advanced technology in Nigeria. She also mentioned that under the administration of the Governor of Kaduna State, His Excellency, Senator Mal. Uba Sani, 5,000 women have been trained in ICT within the first hundred days in office, in collaboration with 10 initiatives, with plans to continue training more women, especially in rural communities.

Dr. Nihilola Fafore, Deputy Director of Huawei Technology Nigeria, along with members of his team, emphasized the importance of learning technology and its impact across various professions. They encouraged participants to apply the knowledge gained from the training to their businesses, as technology simplifies business ventures.

In his remarks, the Vice-Chancellor of Kaduna State University, Prof. Abdullahi Ibrahim Musa, welcomed and acknowledged the initiative, stressing the crucial role women play in society. He reiterated KASU's commitment to championing the use of technology for the advancement of education in the State.

Breaking Barriers through Gender Equality in Higher Education Leadership

A pioneering initiative aimed at addressing gender disparity in Higher Education leadership positions took center stage at Kaduna State University (KASU) on 25th and 26th June 2024. Spearheaded by a collaborative effort between KASU and York St. John University, funded by the British Council, the "Gender and Leadership in Higher Education" project hosted a transformative workshop.

Dr. Olalekan Adekola and Prof. Hauwa’u Evelyn Yusuf lead the project as Principal Investigators (PI's) from York St John University and KASU respectively, with Dr. Asma'u M. Ahmed and Mrs. Bashariya Mustapha Baba serving as Deputy Leads from KASU's Department of Geography.

During the workshop, stakeholders buttressed the importance of inclusive mentoring in cultivating future leaders within Higher Education Institutions. In his welcome address, the Vice-Chancellor of KASU, Prof. Abdullahi I. Musa stressed the university's commitment to gender equality, highlighting the contributions of capable female leaders in its current management team. Prof. Musa also formalized the university's support by signing a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the workshop organizers.

The Honourable Commissioner for the Ministry of Human Services and Development, Hajiya Rabi Salisu representing Kaduna State Governor, His Excellency, Senator Uba Sani, lauded the initiative and underlined the administration's dedication to promoting women's inclusion in leadership roles.

A panel discussion titled "The Issues, Challenges, Opportunities, and Solutions" featured insights from Prof. John G. Laah, Barr. Samira Balarabe (Registrar of KASU), and Haj. Wasila Sani Saulawa, exploring pervasive gender stereotypes that hinder progress and proposing actionable solutions.

The workshop, which drew participants from across the state, included interactive sessions and a certificate award ceremony. Attendees were encouraged to apply their newfound knowledge to advance gender equity in their professional endeavors.

Key university figures including DVC Academic Prof. Yusha'u Ibrahim Ango, DVC Strategy, Innovation, and Service Delivery Prof. Helen Afang Andow, and the university Bursar, Hajiya Hauwa'u Muhammad Dalhat, among others, lent their support to the event.

"Partnering with security agencies is crucial for safeguarding the lives of our community members" ~ Prof. Abdullahi I. Musa

The Management of Kaduna State University (KASU), under the leadership of Vice-Chancellor Prof. Abdullahi I. Musa, visited the Kaduna State Command of the Nigeria Police on Tuesday, 11th June 2024.

Prof. Musa expressed the University's eagerness to establish a close partnership with the Nigeria Police, emphasizing the critical role of security in the community. He highlighted that KASU's engagement with its community aligns with the University's new strategic plan aimed at transforming it into a world-class institution.

Prof. Musa also affirmed KASU's commitment to fostering partnerships that build on the University's achievements since its inception. He expressed interest in having KASU security personnel trained by the Kaduna police command and equally offered to enrol police officers in courses beneficial to the force, including customized special courses in KASU.

Assistant Inspector General (AIG) Yahaya Sahabu Abubakar, who was recently promoted to Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG), praised the visit for promoting institutional security and commended KASU for recognizing the police as a partner.

Kaduna State Commissioner of Police, C.P. Ali Audu Dabigi, lauded the KASU delegation for strengthening the existing relationship between the University and the Kaduna Police Command. He stressed the importance of maintaining this relationship to enhance security in KASU, Kaduna State, and Nigeria. C.P. Dabigi also noted the command's readiness for capacity building and interest in enrolling Police personnel in courses beneficial to the Nigerian Police in KASU.

"Fertile land is essential for human survival; therefore, we must care for the environment in which we live" ~Dr. Hadiza Sabuwa Balarabe

The Kaduna State Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources, in collaboration with UNICEF and ACReSAL, organized and celebrated World Environmental Day with the theme "Land Restoration, Degradation and Drought Resilience." The event took place on Wednesday, 5th June 2024, at the 1000-seater Auditorium of Kaduna State University (KASU).

The well-attended event featured presentations focused on environmental preservation. A notable highlight was a drama sponsored by the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources, projected for the audience, emphasizing the importance of planting at least five trees for every tree cut down to mitigate the risks of diseases and drought.

In her speech, the Deputy Governor of Kaduna State, Dr. Hadiza Sabuwa Balarabe, emphasized the critical importance of environmental preservation for the well-being of the population. She reaffirmed the state's current administration's commitment, led by Senator Uba Sani, to environmental conservation and announced an upcoming statewide campaign aimed at planting millions of trees.

While representing the Commissioner of Environment and Natural Resources, the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Mrs Linda Yakubu, urged the attendees to view World Environment Day as a continuous commitment rather than a one-day event, fostering environmental consciousness for future generations.

Awards were also presented to the winners of quizzes held before the event, acknowledging their contributions to a greener, better environment.

The event concluded with the Deputy Governor and other dignitaries launching a tree-planting initiative within the university, underscoring the significance of tree planting and environmental stewardship.

The event had in attendance the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman, Governing Council of Kaduna State University, Mal. (Dr) Husaini Adamu Dikko, Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Abdullahi I. Musa, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor Academic, Prof. YushauI.
